Alexandra Event Update – 21st May 2017

Hi all, some more news from The Alexandra Event 2017 team. We are excited to announce our pathtag design competition went very well and the committee have decided on the winner. A massive congratulations go to the designer “OzGlory” on 5 very well themed Pathtags. These will go on sale shortly, but we were so excited we could not resist giving you all a sneak peak. So, here they are:

Some news for those in states other than Victoria, we have created some lead-up events interstate again this year with one in South Australia, New South Wales, ACT, and shortly, one also in Queensland. Many thanks go to our interstate volunteers for hosting these events on our behalf.

Again, it is great seeing your “Will Attends” come in, we even have some interest from overseas. If you haven’t already, and would like to experience all the fun first-hand:

See you all in November, if not before at one of our lead-up events:

  • June – 3rd – Werribee
  • July – 15th – Canberra
  • August – 6th – Echuca
  • September – 23rd – Bairnsdale
  • October – 15th – Wangaratta

20% off your #AX2017 Shirts?

We love seeing the creative ideas people have come up with when ordering their #AX2017 t-shirts, and just between you and me, a little birdy* has suggested getting your hands on some #AX2017 merchandise is a good idea, and, as if by magic, Spreadshirt has a special offer this coming week, 15–21 May:

20% off any order of two items or more when you use coupon code 20P517**.

Head to gcmelb.spreadshirt.com.au and put your own spin on an #AX2017 t-shirt or two, grab a toasty-warm #AX2017 hoodie and beanie for those chilly winter months ahead, or perhaps a g-string thong is more your style? Or – here’s a thought – you can partner up with a geo-friend, save 20% and go halvies on the postage. Make your stuff your own and add your cacher username and personal trackable code to your merchandise – just don’t expect many people to ‘discover’ your g-string, lol!

The fine print:
*Watch this space for more info from the little birdy.
**This offer cannot be combined with other discounts or coupon codes, and is valid for a purchase of two or more items in one transaction.

Oh, and if you are planning on displaying your wares at GC6GFDX – The Alexandra Event in November and haven’t done so already, log your ‘Will Attend’ now! Go on, do it now while it’s on your mind 😊

Alexandra Event Update – 2nd April

First up, we love seeing the ‘Will Attend’ numbers steadily inclining, thank-you to all who have logged so far – we can’t wait to see you all in Alexandra in November!

We still have a long way to go before November hits, and it’s great to see so many people attending our lead-up events being held all over the state – 40 teams ventured as far west as Portland during the Labor Day weekend in March, and today we caught up with 52 teams in Warragul.

Warragul Group
The Attendees

The next event sees us heading up to the border and throwing some free snags on the barbie in Swan Hill on the 7th of May. Now here’s some food for thought: by attending these lead-up events you can still potentially earn shiny new geocoins for your collection! It’s like a reward for getting out and socialising whilst eating bushman’s sausages, courtesy of Anvil Angus and Alexandra Quality Meats. Sweet! (The deal, that is – not the snags. The snags are savoury, not sweet.) We hope to see you there!

Ooh, speaking of geocoins, if you want to get your hands on the first #AX2017 geocoin, now is the time to act. Orders will close forever on this limited edition coin on the 9th April. That is next Sunday people! And remember, this coin is being minted for a very worthy cause – all proceeds from the sale of this particular coin will be donated to the Geocaching Melbourne teams competing in this year’s Oxfam Trailwalker challenge. So it’s a win-win for all – you get a shiny new geocoin coupled with that feel-good feeling of helping make a difference, and our teams get closer to their donation targets. You can purchase your coin here.

ax2017-geocoin-ox

Maybe geocoins aren’t your cup-of-tea? Maybe you prefer pathtags? Not to fear, we have you covered. Well, we will have you covered … In fact, if you are creatively-inclined, we have a competition that may be right up your alley! Yep, it’s a pathtag design competition 🙂 We have an excellent prize up for grabs and all you need to do to be in the running is design five pathtags. Easy, right? You also need to submit your designs to info@geocaching.melbourne by midnight on April 30th 2017. FYI, that is four weeks from now. Put your thinking caps on and see what you can do with this year’s themes: Lake, Mountains, Walking, Kayaking, 4WD and climbing. But enough of the rules, what is this awesome prize, you ask? Well, we are glad you asked … You will, of course, receive a set of 2017 pathtags and an #AX2017 Unobtanium geocoin. But wait, there’s more! You will also receive a set of free steak knives … oh, wait … hang on … we have no steak knives … but we do have something better, from the man with the best steak in town … You will also win a highly-coveted, rarer-than-rare Unobtanium Clever Monkey geocoin, kindly donated by Clever Monkey. Woohoo!

Don’t forget you can order your own unique #AX2107 attire for the occasion too, or any occasion for that matter. Just head to Spreadshirt to place your order. Put your own spin on some #AX2017 shirts, or maybe a g-string thong is more your style? Why not get in early and show us your creative genius? Maybe just don’t show us a picture of you modelling your new underwear, lol!

Finally, just a bit of insider information between you and me, this year is shaping up to be the best yet. Don’t just take it from me though, log your ‘Will Attend’ now if you haven’t already, and experience all the fun first-hand.

What is a Pathtag?

For those of you that do not know about the craze that is pathtags, here is a little info on what it is all about:

“Pathtags are personal trading items. Used most often in Geocaching, they are also very handy for Scouting, Military and Promotional use. A pathtag is a single-sided custom metal tag about the size and weight of a U.S. Quarter, a one Euro coin or an Australian ten cent piece.”

Believe it or not, Australia is the biggest consumer of pathtags outside the US and it is getting more and more popular every day.

You may have found a pathtag in a cache somewhere or even seen others swapping them at an event. How do I get started you say? Well, is is quite simple really. If you know a little about design, you can actually design one yourself. If not, do not worry, there are lots of people out in the caching community that for a nominal fee will design one for you.

Go to pathtags.com to check out latest deals and current prices to get your own tags minted.

blueprintahomburg pathtagblueprintv2

During the pathtag creation process, you can choose from a selection of “Give Backs” just like the Geocaching Melbourne ones below.

Cachers by Cachers – sedgwickDave

Profile submitted by ahomburg:

I first met sedgwickDave at the Easter at Home event During Easter 2011. My third or fourth event and the first time speaking to anyone from the caching world. Dave was a softly spoken guy and we hit it off straight away, mainly I think because we lived very close to each other.

While not a prolific hider, his caches are of a good quality and definitely follow the Morsix rules. The first of his caches I did in 2011 was slide and seek, a traditional first hide. He followed that up with a trio of caches in 2013 on Lilydale lake which I was lucky enough to get FTF on all three. I was challenged by his next hide, the Victorian LGA Polygon challenge as it took me to all corners of the state on a big road trip in January. An awesome time was had. His latest hide, Archimedes starts off with quite a good puzzle followed by  ….. you will have to find it for yourself.

Dave is an extremely focused and enthusiastic individual who puts his mind to something and goes full throttle. A fine example was when he started to play the other location based games Munzee and Ingress. He leveled up in both of these games very quickly. Lucky for us all, he came back to caching as his main passion and has many more Ideas for new caches to come.

Dave’s puzzle solving abilities are up there with the best, and without his help and hints, many a puzzle would have gone unsolved and unfound for me.

sedgwickDave at find #3000
sedgwickDave at find #3000

Dave near GZ at Glide with the Eagles in July 2013 where we teamed up for find #3000

Dave and I still cache regularly today and our cache runs are always memorable. One of the best memories was our 3000th find which with some careful planning, we managed to find at the same cache on the same day.
