“It’s on.”

You probably heard by now that we had so much fun at the Melbourne Mega, we’re doing it again 🙂 This time we moved to the other side of town to a stunning setting: Sun, surfing, beach, Anglesea, Great Otway National Park, Apollo Bay, 12 Apostles, Lorne, koalas, rainforest and wineries – yes this is the world’s famous Great Ocean Road. Of course

The Surf Coast Event 2016
will be
FREE

to attend, sign the logbook and take part in a lot of activities. If you are as excited as we are and you can’t wait until November, here are a couple of things you can do:

  • Support us – Visit the cache page and log your will attend, if you’re joining the fun.
  • Browse the website – It’s online and it’s up there in the menu bar above.
  • Get in touch – If you have any suggestions or ideas, let us know. We really like to thank everyone who already gave us their honest and constructive feedback via the survey or otherwise. That was very valuable information.
  • Spread the word – This will be the biggest Geocaching event in the southern hemisphere of 2016. Tell your friends, family and the neighbour’s pony about it. The more the merrier.
  • Find us a sponsor – If you know a business or you own a business which might be interested in supporting this event, tell them to contact us. Our sponsorship agreements are all tailor made so all parties benefit from this partnership.
  • Follow us – Check out our social media accounts which you can find all over the place.
  • Sign up for the newsletter – You will be the first to know and to read new posts.
  • Go caching – Every time you write a fantastic logs, hide an amazing adventures, make great geocaching friends and have fun out there finding boxes, Fern the Forest Fairy joyfully glows.

In general we like to hear from you! This is a FREE event from Geocachers for Geocachers which means we’re celebrating the diversity of this hobby. It doesn’t matter whether you’re caching since yesterday or for 15 years. It’s all about bringing the community together, making new friends and catch up with the old ones. Without you this wouldn’t be possible.

And the Winner is!

It was a hard fierce and feisty competition but in the end there can be only one winner. This year’s Fern’s Cache Competition had throughout remarkable entries and it’s easy to say all of them are far beyond the average cache quality.  Thanks to everyone who got the tools out, created something great for the geocaching community and finally submitted an entry. Well done guys! Even with the combined experience of 20.000 finds , over 600 placed caches, 8 D/T loops and over 36 years of geocaching, the jury still had a hard time to find a winner. They collected 150 data-points of marks and poured them into a sophisticated rating-tool to come up with the following scores:

Ladies and Gentlemen!
The winners of the 2015 Fern’s Geocaching Competition are

  1. Jo Brock & Glen Kennedy with Fern’s Pyrenees Retreat
Winning a golden unobtainium The Melbourne Event 2015 geocoin
    _
  2. Karen Smit and with James Sanderson with Fairy Abode
Winning a limited edition The Melbourne Event 2015 geocoin
    _
  3. Elizabeth Shaw with Fern’s letterbox, Bass Valley.
Winning a complete The Melbourne Event 2015 pathtag set in a nice laser-cut holder.
We also like to point out that this is Elizabeth’s first cache placement ever and we’re pretty sure this one is a hot runner for the Victorian Cache of the Year in the category “Best First Cache”._

You will find all of these amazing entries on a Geocaching Melbourne bookmark list – and just to keep things interesting, I’ll give out some random geocoins out of Philipp’s tack room to the first cacher who finds all six geocaches and sends me a selfie of them with the cache-box. Just email me at fern@geocaching.melbourne when you’re done 🙂 Now go out find some caches or enjoy the gallery of the beautiful caches below.

The Melbourne Event 2015 – Final Pre-Event Blog Post.

This is it.

  • The final trailer before Episode VII gets into the cinemas
  • The sunrise before the final summit ascent
  • The drive to the airport to pick up your loved one after a long trip
  • The final blog post before The Melbourne Event 2015

We can’t wait to see you there, it will be amazing 🙂 If this doesn’t get you excited, have a read through this blog post and all the other announcements we made over the past few months. And if you really can’t wait this is how it looks like on google streetview.

It’s Free

Yep, we’re saying it again: The event is free to attend. You can turn up any time over the whole weekend, walk around the grounds, and browse the stalls of your favorite geocaching stores that will be there, including the famous Geostuff.com.au. It is free to attend most of the sessions (providing you register), participate in a multitude of games that will be running over the weekend, or just sit back and have a chat with some friends and have a good old yarn about geocaching. Oh, and maybe even head out and find a geocache… Whatever you choose, all of the above is free! Don’t forget to sign the log book – that’s free too – and

please log an attended online if you were there

Thanks 🙂

Plus, you get stuff!

Want something for nothing? Well guess what, you guessed it – there will be event bags full of random stuff! What’s in these event bags? Well, at the moment that is a VERY closely guarded secret. To find out you will need to register, follow the instructions to register for your FREE event bag….

  • You’ve already logged your will attend up to (and including) the 26th September 2015.
  • Go to our Eventbrite page and register for the showbag ticket. The number of tickets and therefore the showbags are limited. If the ticket doesn’t show up, use the access code WUNDERTUETE. Make sure your GC account name is exactly the same spelling as it shows up on Geocaching.com

Sponsors

First things first: We’d like to thank our awesome sponsors, who have helped us put this whole thing together.

BBQ and Fireworks, GC63717 in Tooradin

Of course we are super-excited about this one. Imagine it!

  • Free entry,
  • Free food,
  • Free fireworks!

That’s right, it’s been published! Check it out and if you can make it, log you “Will Attend” on GC63717. Entry is free and there will be fireworks later in the night. Plus, to get your free food lovingly supplied by Anvil Angus on the night, you can just go to

S 38° 12.783 E145° 22.813

grab a wrist band head over to where the scouts are cooking and eat to your hearts content! All for absolutely nothing! How good is that? If you’re attending the Meet the Mountaineer session on Saturday, we’ll give you a wrist-band so you don’t have to rush.

Drinks will be available for purchase from the scouts, or you can bring along your own (non-alcoholic). Sorry our music act had to cancel – he will be on a last minute bucks night.

 You-insta-twitter-book

Once upon a time there was geocaching but no social media. Can you believe it? If you’re going out there this coming weekend share your adventures using following hashtag.

#gcmelb2015

You don’t have to share what you had for breakfast … actually that would be funny: Everybody! Share what you had for breakfast on the 14th November using the hashtag 🙂 And don’t forget to check what everybody else is up to!

BYO Nametags

Do you also have problems remembering all those faces, names and geocaching names? We get confused on a regular basis. If you wan’t to be called e.g Andrew instead of talla 2xlc, make yourself a nice tag which makes it easy for everyone to figure out who you are. You’ll be surprised how many cachers have read your account name somewhere and have a story to share.

Canoeing

We didn’t get as many takers for the canoeing as we hoped! What did we do wrong? Was it something we said? Anyway… we have enough people to make it a go-er if at a slightly higher price.  Please head over to the booking page if you’d like to give it a go.

TRY Spotto Competition

In the next couple of months, you might be seeing TRY Mentoring on the back of buses running between Tullamarine to the Outer South East of Melbourne, including Frankston, Berwick and Dandenong. This is exactly where the Mega is happening!

If you see any of these posters, take a photo and post it to the TRY Australia Facebook page for your chance to win a prize!

Geocoins (no more pathtags)

imageSorry, the pathtags have sold out but there are still some very nice geocoins which can be purchased from our pre-sale page. In fact the coins have arrived at Fern’s Forest Fairy HQ and they are awesome. If you can’t wait to see one in the flesh check out the trackable code MEGABM and discover it now. These coins can be picked up at the event, or for a small postage fee, we can send them to you once we have them.

Everyone who has pre-ordered, we will be putting them into the post on Wednesday.  We are making sure you get your precious shinies, so the pack will require a signature.

How to Obtain the Unobtanium.

Finally, another great example of how awesome this weekend is really going to be. You will have the chance of obtaining the unobtainable. That’s right, a hallowed, pure sort of gold, unobtanium “The Melbourne Event” geocoin. Imagine the prestige, the fame, the fortune that would come with ownership of this uber rare coin? So how do you get your hands on one of these babys? Well, we will be running some competitions over the weekend…

  • FTF Raffle Draw. Yep, when you log your attendance in our log book at the registration desk, you will have the option of buying tickets in our FTF raffle draw. Tickets are only $1 each and you can buy as many as you like, proceeds go to The Friends of the Leadbeater Possum. The winner not only gets to claim FTF on the first MEGA event in the state of Victoria, but they also get one of the unobtanium “Melbourne Event 2015” geocoins!
  • Bingo. What would a large scale Geocaching Melbourne event be without a large scale BINGO competition? Grab your bingo sheets at the registration desk and set about ticking off the boxes. Submit your completed forms and you too may have a chance at nabbing the top prize, an unobtanium “Melbourne Event 2015” geocoin!
  • Guess the number of caches. So we have procured a rather large fish tank. We are in the process of filling it with geocaches big and small. Your task is to head over to the TRY Australia stall, buy a ticket and have a guess at how many geocaches are actually in the fishtank. Closest to the pin gets one super rare unobtanium “Melbourne Event 2015” geocoin and all profits go directly to TRY!
  • Widegame. Something a bit different and new. You will need a smartphone with location services enabled on your web browser. Head over to the registration desk to get the details of the places that you are looking for and the link to play the game. Figure out where you need to go. Once there, on your phone, submit your position and caching name “on location”. Our central computer will tally the results live back at HQ at the pavilion at Casey Fields on the big screen for all to see. Those who complete the game will go into the draw to win prizes, the ultimate prize of course being the hallowed unobtanium “Melbourne Event 2015” geocoin!

CITOs

cito_72There are two CITOs running over the weekend of the MEGA event. The Casey Council has been fantastic in helping us put this event on and so we would like to thank them in the best way we know how. Cleaning up some rubbish! You can join in the fun and get your hands dirty on either day.

  • Saturday 14th November, GC61TQ9 – Narre warren
  • Sunday 15th November, GC61TWN – Lysterfield

There will be an announcement on the CITO page later in the week regarding some safety issues at these sites.  The most important being that you must wear solid footwear.  The terrain around these sites is uneven and it a real concern of council that some people may turn up wearing inappropriate footwear.  If you turn up with open toed foot wear (ie sandals or thongs) you will be allowed to sign the log book and help out around the registration desk, but you will not be allowed to help clean up the rubbish.  If there are adverse weather conditions, or a fire danger rating at or above a “severe” level, the events will be cancelled.  You will be required to sign the log book before you begin collecting rubbish.  The log book doubles as also your registration for CUAD (Clean Up Australia Day) which covers us for our liability insurance.

If you are coming to one of the CITOs, and you are able to, if you could bring along any of the following from home, it would be very useful…

  • Your own gloves
  • Your own hi-viz vest
  • Your own bottle of water
  • Sun hat/sun glasses
  • Anything else you may have at home that you think might be useful.

Finally, if you are coming to one of the CITOs and you have a certificate 2 or above 1st aid, if you could let one of the organizers know, it would be very appreciated.

LAB Caches

Exactly what are these things? Well they are a geocache creators license to experiment outside the normal rules! No proximity rules, no commercialization rules, no review process, no log book. Just imagine the possibilities! All those really cool cache ideas that wouldn’t normally get past the review process can be done as a LAB cache. Geocaching Melbourne is excited to announce that we will have a LAB cache adventure at the Melbourne Event 2015 that will rival the absolute best out there. So who is creating this adventure? Well we have asked some of the best geocache makers in Victoria to get their creative juices flowing, untie the normal shackles that would hold them back from being truly creative and to create an adventure that participants will walk away from saying “WOW, that was awesome!”

Kids area

Kids love geocaching and we know there are some awesome juvenile geocachers out there, so we have dedicated a whole area for the geocaching kids to play in at the MEGA. Whilst this is not a crèche and a parent will still be required to be in attendance whilst the kids are there, we will have plenty of fun-filled really cool activities for the young geocachers to do. Simply look for the kids area in the main room at The Melbourne Event

A souvenir

IMG_4265Yep, that’s right, we are very pleased to announce that there will actually be a souvenir awarded to everyone who logs our MEGA event as “attended”! It features the infamous feet at Princes Pier in Port Melbourne as well as cute little Fern playing in the forest.

What to bring on the day. (Don’t forget your $1 coins)

Melbourne weather can be unpredictable but we are expecting good weather (at this stage). It would be a good idea to bring plenty of water, sunscreen (we will have some on site just in case), a warm top, a chair or picnic blanket (see above post re: BYO chairs), a towel and a raincoat/umbrella. Geocachers are good at having things on hand. So load the car with everything you might need. There is nothing like sharing for those that forgot.

Also as most of the competitions are $1 to enter, bring as much change as possible. This just makes life easier for everyone and gets you moving onto your next competition quicker!

Melbourne Event Update – October 2015 – Mk Two

How has your weekend been so far? The good weather came back for some days and we hope you made good use of it. The big event is less than three weeks away with the first activities (GIFF Melbourne & Tree Climbing) starting within a fortnight. OMG IT IS REALLY HAPPENING!

We will keep the update crisp and short. That should give you more time to go merchandise shopping and brag about you being part of this 🙂

sofareihenYou’re not that fussed about the sessions or games? You just want to hang out with your caching mates, trade shiny things, make new friends and enjoy yourself? You are more than welcome to do that! In fact we got a whole field dedicated for exactly that. Bring your camping chair, marquee, couch*, bed-side table and picnic blanket and enjoy the sunshine (fingers crossed!).

* If you actually bring a couch, you have to take it home at the end of the day like everything else. The field can’t be accessed with vehicles so you have to carry everything in and out.

Stalls.

You will be able to take a wonder around the many amazing stalls that will be set up at the MEGA.  You will be sure to find some really cool stuff and probably learn a whole heap as well too.

Remote Adventure July 2015

Derringer Cache Map

There is this old-school cacher called Derringer (His real name is Kevin but barely anyone knows that). His caches and the adventures connected with it are stories of persistence and perseverance. These are caches you just don’t walk up to; they require a fair amount of effort if you want to find them:

om0i4

Like walking into Modor, this is not happening the easy way. If you need proof of this, just mention The Silent Sentinel to some of the more experienced hiking cachers, Despite being archived it remains to be the Nemesis or the Holy Grail of every ambitious hiker. In that spirit a cache tributed to him was recently placed in the Cathedral Ranges. Unsurprisingly it already got some attention before it even got found. Robin (aka robinyang) gave it a good crack – twice – and still ended up without the smiley.
After these epic DNFs on the cache, Robin is still determined to give this adventure another / 3rd try tomorrow Saturday 25.7.

This time we patched him up with a satellite tracker and a link to our social media accounts. Make sure you’re tuning in from 8 am to see this adventure unfolding live from the comfort of your home.

P.S.: On the map it doesn’t look too bad.

The Melbourne Event Update – July

It has been a while 🙂

You may or may not have noticed: We officially reached the Mega Event Status. Yes – this is now the biggest event in the southern hemisphere. Ok only 12% of the world’s population lives there but it’s still awesome 🙂 If you’re following us on facebook, our website or instagram account, you probably know most of the below. However for your convenience we collated it in this simple post:

wpid-1433360166.jpg• FREE EVENT – We can’t stress this enough 😉 There is no entrance fee and almost all sessions are free to attend as well. Speaking of which:

• SESSIONS – We announced most of the upcoming sessions on our website at https://geocaching.melbourne/category/activities-2/ Now we just have to put them into the schedule and get the booking system up and running. Why do we need a booking system if it’s free? Because space is limited and we might have to shuffle some locations pending interest. You’ll be the first to know when it’s happening … well maybe after the volunteers :o)

VCC white• TREE CLIMBING – Due to some schedule clashes, we had to move the introduction into basic tree climbing. The date hasn’t been finalised but it will be on the weekend before OR on the Friday before the event. If you are superstitious, you probably don’t want to put your life on the line on Friday the 13th – for everyone else: watch this space and check out the Victorian Climbing Club who will set-up this trip* vicclimb.org.au/

willow-creek-vineyard_mp_credit-adrian-lander_r_1182111_503x283• WINERY TOUR – Do you have a partner who’s not that into Geocaching and can’t be bothered about searching for tupperware in the woods (aka sistema containers in the bush)? Yes we know the feeling but we still love them so don’t park them in Småland! Be nice and send them off on a Winery Tour! It’s happening on the Sunday. Booking will be available together with the sessions.

• SHIRTS – We heard you. Everyone wants some new shiny and fancy garment. Trust us – Carl is working on it and we are very confident you won’t be disappointed.

• SOUVENIR – Fern the Forest Fairy is already on the easel and painting a shiny souvenir for you to earn by attending The Melbourne Event 2015. Find out more about souvenirs at http://support.groundspeak.com/index.php?pg=kb.page&id=272

• FUN AND GAMES – Can it get any better? Yes it can! We always said this will be fun so we are planning a couple of games. After all this is about bringing the Geocaching Community together.

• SPONSORSHIP – Beside Geostuff and Anvil Angus we welcome Logo_Geocaching_NightCacheGreyGeocaching as the latest sponsor :o) Happy Days!

****** VOLUNTEERS WANTED ******

Although there is a bunch of us who are running this event, we’re not supernatural and do need a helping hand. Actually we need heaps of them. If you want to help a couple of hours at a time over the two days, please get in touch. This is just general registration of interest and details will follow later. The volunteer registration form is available at https://geocaching.melbourne/event2015/volunteers-registration/ (We haven’t released a precise volunteer schedule yet because the schedule for the session isn’t up and we want all volunteers to attend the sessions they are interested in)

Have an outstanding weekend, pray for snow and a special thanks in advance to everyone who registers as volunteer 🙂

Cheers and see you at Casey Fields in November!
The Geocachers of Victoria

* you have to be a member with the VCC to attend this trip.

Extreme Roadtripping

The Geocaching road trip is upon us and the most difficult challenge lies in front : Find a D5 or T5 cache.

Some of you eat risk for breakfast (I know – it tastes like beacon) so this  is merely a challenge but  most cachers haven’t even done one of these caches – where do you even start?

  • For D5 caches there are some evil mind benders out there which can drive the best puzzle solvers to insanity. Mention Masonic Cipher or 1789 to people and you’ll get the vibe.
  • On the T5 side there are also some equal insane caches out there.

However this is not about showcasing caches which are made not to be found or killing you along the process – this is about getting the souvenir which starts on the 17th July! In order to make it a bit easier here are some good caches for T5 or D5 beginners:

Easy D5 and T5 caches around Melbourne  – Map View
They are all hand-picked in order to make your life a bit easier. You’re welcome 🙂

P.S.: Kayak caches are left out deliberately because at that time of year the can kill you … really fast.

Website updates

Obviously this website is rather new and we are still working hard at creating content.  We have added quite a few FAQ‘s and are currently in the process of producing How to… guides.  If you want us to over a particular topic please contact us with the Feedback form above or via email to info@geocaching.melbourne

More pages will be added as we go along, particularly if they are requested.  We will also be sure to keep you the loop with developments of the Massive Melbourne Event.

Cachers by Cachers

We want to feature a Victorian Geocacher to help you get to know some of the known, and lesser known, people who play our game. Each profile will be written by someone that knows the geocacher as a tribute, rather than an interview style by the geocacher themselves.

All the profiles will be listed here and tagged so you can find them easily.

If you are interested in writing one for a geocacher you admire, please contact us using the feedback form accessed from the menu.
