We want you…

Geocaching Melbourne doesn’t just run itself, in the background are a dedicated bunch of monkeys passionate geocachers just like you working away to make geocaching better for everyone in Victoria.

Do you feel you have something to offer? We’d love to hear from you. We have two positions vacant on our committee and want to fill them with people as passionate and driven as us.
This position is for the Geocaching Melbourne Committee, not the Alexandra Event, so rest assured that event is well in hand. If you would like to join us in helping further the cause of Geocaching in Melbourne and Victoria (if not the world!) then feel free to nominate yourself or someone else (with their permission) by sending us an email.

Please note though that whilst we would love to encourage people from country Victoria, it should be understood that taking on the role as a committee member means attending regular meetings in Melbourne roughly every two to three months.  All nominations will be put towards a community voting process in the next few weeks.

Victorian Geocaching Tournament

And the results are in!!! With a bumper entry of more than 50 teams and everyone getting out and about having a great time, I think we can declare the Victorian Geocaching Tournament a success!! Below are the winners of the ribbons and I have put a link to a full table of results and another link to some photos I hope you will enjoy.

Thanks to everyone who participated and an even bigger thanks to my great team of volunteers, without whom the game would not have been able to run.

Highest Scoring Team

Having completed all puzzles, all the physical challenges and field puzzles, along with two multis caches, 4 traditional caches 3 GCA caches and having completed 9 out of the 10 photo challenges the overall winning team was: Victims of BFE

Letterbox Posters – family team

Taking a cancellation place in the game and having travelled down from Sydney, the team GEOSAURUS did really well to take out first place under stuff competition from the other family teams.

Multi Masters – family team

with two kids in tow Jandaw made quick work of the family course and came out victorious!

Puzzlers – family team

It was a close competition with the puzzlers family teams, but Wonderdrug was first back into the stables (even navigating the whole course with a pusher!!) and came away with the prize.

Traditionalist – family team

With three kids to wrangle around the course, The Adventure-Nauts did a great job on the family course to take out first place for the Traditionalists squad.

Letterbox Posters

After a last minute hiccup with the game admin not allocating them a squad (sorry guys, my fault) the Cachebusters were given a no-shows place.  They were strong competitors and blitzed all the other Letterbox Posters in the field!

Multi Masters

Coming from the wrong other side of the ditch, Team New Zealand gave sharkiefan a double birthday surprise of having an unexpected visit appear and surprise her on Saturday morning and taking out the Multi Master team prize!

Puzzlers

Hailing from the inner north, these intrepid geocachers are to be congratulated for competing so well with two underage members in their team, well done to the Kangamasters

Traditionalist

Made up of three SA teams, TieLoClare blitzed the locals and took out the ribbon. To save arguments about who was going to get it, they have asked us to look into how much getting some duplicates made will cost!

Photo Challenge

With an impressive 7 teams completing all of the photo for the Photo Challenge, the adjudicators were forced to do a random number draw for this prize.  We drew the South Australian team who’s name is made up of an anagram of all their team names.  I was unable to announce their name at the awards ceremony (as I hadn’t written it down), but I can put it here: SA complex sized punk goat winery door hole

Mini game / Best Poker hand

Over half of the team playing the both games were able to submit complete poker hands and enter this mini competition.  With hands ranging from a 10, to a pair of 2 and as good as 3 queens and two pairs!! The winning hand though went to PinkPiggy7 with a straight!

Best dressed team

After the madness of Saturday was over and the committee was fed and watered, the Tournament photographer sat us down to look at the entries in the Best Dressed Team competition.  Boy were we impressed! Because of this we decided to award a couple of extra prizes.  All the entries can be seen here

Best Dressed Family Team

Rusty Day – winning two WA goes Big coins

Best Dressed Team

Cachebusters – Winning the ribbon and 3 2015 Melbourne Event coins

The Synchronised T-shirt Award

Team Clarmensma – winning 2 2015 Melbourne Event coins

Best Legs Award

Goths+1 – winning a WA Goes Big coin

Best performance at a physical challenge

A difficult award to judge, and there were many fantastic performances over the course of the day, but in the end the team has decided to award team Jaktembo the prize, for the kids out preforming the adults at Activity Point 3 the bean bag toss.

Here is a link to some of the photos taken during the Victorian Geocaching Tournament.

Here is a list of the teams, their squads and their final scores.

Surf Coast – and the winners are….

We ran a number of competitions at the Mega this year and we have a number of winners to announce.  In a separate pose, we will also have a run down of all the antics and winners of the Victorian Geocaching Tournament.

First to Find

All money raised in the First to Find raffle this year will be being donated to the Stroke Foundation.  Thanks to everyone’s generous support, we will be forwarding them $446

We invited one of the two visiting ladies from Germany to draw a winner and the lucky winners were Southern Cross Caching from South Australia!  Their prize is currently driving home to them.

Caches in the Fish Tank

For most of the weekend the guess the number of caches in the fish tank competition was being run by the local CFA and all money raised gone has to them.

Amazingly we had a DRAW with two teams correctly guessing 196 caches in the fish tank. We were able to rustle up a 2nd Unobtainium Geocoin which were awarded to two very happy ladies.  Congratulations to Mary of maccamob and carkisser.

Geo-Bingo

Despite Sunday being a much quieter day than Saturday, we still had plenty of people running around and meeting new people whilst filling in their GeoBingo cards.  We decided to have two draws this year, one with the whole sheet filled out, and one with just one line completed.

Whole sheet

Matetrix from Canberra, who is IamCoust‘s son, will be taking away an Unobtainium Geocoin

Geo-Bingo – one line

Awesome Nugget from Ballarat, who was attending the Surf Coast event with his family, has won a Limited Edition Surf Coast Event 2016 glitter Geocoin!

Volunteer thank you prize

In addition to the warm glow of happiness all our volunteers got from helping make the Surf Coast Event the amazing event it was, they got the fantastic Henchmen and Henchwomen shirts you will have seen all over the place for the  weekend.   We also had one amazingly generous anonymous geocacher donate a very impressive double sided folding ladder, which we decided to use in a draw of all the volunteers for the weekend as another way of saying “Thanks for giving up some of your weekend to help everyone have a fun time!”  Our random winner was GJMMelb!!! So congratulations to them and thanks to all the amazing volunteers over the weekend!

GenieJoan’s prize winning duck!

At today’s 2 Months to the Surf Coast event in Ballarat, we all got to meet a real celebrity. GenieJoan brought along her prizing winning GLUTTONY DUCK.  This intrepid little traveler took out the Furthest Distance Traveled 1st prize in the recent HQ Duck Dash competition.  He has traveled 75,726.610 miles, or 105,028.3km in real numbers!! That’s about 1/3rd of the way to the moon, more than 2.5 times around the world or 5 times the length of the Great Wall of China!

Thanks for bringing your duck along today GenieJoan and here’s to many more kilometers for your world famous duck!!

Red25 – Blood donation program

Cancer patients, road trauma victims, women giving birth, and people with blood disorders are just some of the people who rely on blood donated to the  Australian Red Cross Blood Service.  The Blood Bank estimates that one in three Australians will need to use donated blood during their lifetime, however out of the 9 million Australians who are eligible to give blood, only 500,000 actively do so.  This is where you can help! You might not be able to complete for Australia at the Olympics, you probable haven’t decided to represent Australia in the international political area BUT you can bleed for Australia!

The Australian Red Cross Blood Service has a giving program that is designed to work towards ensuring that 25% of Australia’s blood donations are secured.  It’s called Red25 and is a unique giving program where we unite with workplaces, schools, universities and other community groups around Australia to save lives through blood donation.  As a result of suggestion on the Facebook page (thanks Paul Ridley!) Geocaching Melbourne is now working towards the Red25 goal.

This is where you come in: if you donate regularly already, at your next donation ask to have Geocaching Melbourne added as your Red25 group.  Or you can do it yourself here.

If you haven’t donated blood before, now is the time to put your hand up! Donating usually takes around an hour, and during that time your get to relax/read a book or magazine. Afterwards, you get a free snack and drink and you get to feel good, knowing you are helping save lives.  The blood donated can be made into 22 different products.

You can see the Geocaching Melbourne Red25 group total online at any time.

Schedule

Whilst we are still fleshing out the details of the sessions that will be running on the Sunday, here is a schedule for the weekend, so you can get planing.

The Great Ocean Road – Did you know?

There is a lot of history down on the Surf Coast, as well as lots of caches and a big event later in the year.  I learnt a few things about the Great Ocean Road today.  Even though I have lived in Victoria all my life, I didn’t know these things, so I thought I would share them with you.

Did you know – History

  • The Great Ocean Road was surveyed in 1918
  • It was built from 1919 – 1932 (13 years!)
  • It was built be returned soldiers from World War 1
  • The Great Ocean Road is dedicated to soldiers killed during World War 1 and,
  • the road is the world’s largest war memorial
  • The original name as going to be South Coast Road
  • Prior to the road being built, most of the towns could only be accessed by sea

Did you know – Numbers

  • Running from Torquay just out side Warnambool, the road is 244km long
  • 3000 men worked to construct the road
  • progress was around 3km per month
  • Built by a private company, the road cost £81,000
  • Workers were paid 10 shillings and sixpence per day
  • It was a toll road until 2 October 1936
  • Tolls were two shillings for cars, and 10 shillings for wagons with more than two horses
